  Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012

  Time: From 13:30 to 16:00

Place: Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont

Description: Coyote Hills Regional Park is on San Francisco Bay, neighbor to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a favorite spot for hiking, cycling, or simply walking. There is an easy, almost flat Bay View Trail loop, paved throughout, about six miles long and is ideal for all ages and all conditions. There also is a Red Hill Trail on the ridge of rolling hills, with steep ascent and descent, but interval being relatively short, good exercise without being strenuous. In clear day, you have in view a vast expanse of bay water, lot of birds: eagle, hawk, Canadian geese, crane, sea gull etc. And you may see here and there some early poppies. Pet is allowed under leach.

(You can refer to the link below for map and other details.)

Direction: Take 84 (from 101, 880 or 680, take Dumbarton Bridge direction), exit at sign of Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, but once passed the sign, please follow the sign for Coyote Hill Regional Park, and turn right onto Paseo Padre Parkway, after Kaiser Dr., turn left at the next intersection onto Patterson Ranch Road. You’ll see a free parking on the road side. Don’t stop, for there is still about 2 miles from the entrance and there is no toilet there. Continue till you stop at park fee station. You pay at the ticket machine for parking fee, $5 per vehicle, take the receipt and put it under the wind shield. Park your car in the first parking lot on your left (Quarry Staging Area).

* Charles and Maili will not join this event. Please do not call and bother them.
* Call Paul Lee if you need help. (510)-676-1343.

Meeting time/Place:  At the Quarry Staging Area parking at 13:15, hiking starts at 13:30.

What to bring:  For those who want to do half Bay View Trail then return on Red Hill Trail, hiking boots and hiking poles are suggested. Otherwise, just come with comfortable walking shoes. Snack and drinking water for all. Since it’s on the bay, bring a piece of warm cloth just in case.

No activity after hike.
We’ll proceed rain or shine.

After initial climbing for 15 minutes on broad road, take Coyote trail, then turn to Wild Cat Loop. Before reaching High Meadow Trail, there is about 0.6 miles climbing on zigzaging  trail. Though the grade is more than 1000 feet, the climbing is not strenuous. From High Meadow Trail, we’ll branch into Upper Wild Cat Canyon Trail, then back to Wild  Cat loop. Then there is option, instead of taking Coyote trail, of trying P.G. & E trail where some more climbing is required, in particular the last stretch before reaching the plateau can be quite demanding. Either way the total length is a bit over 7 miles.  The trails are 80% shaded under oak and bay trees, 20% open.

Hwy 280, exit Foothill Expressway, right turn (direction 280 south) or left turn (280 north); 1st traffic light, right turn to Cristo Rey Drive, after 0.8 miles, at a small panel marking Rancho San Antonio Park on the right side, turn left into park parking.

Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, 1:30 – 4:30 pm
Millbrae Public Library, 1 Library Ave., Millbrae

A Sip of Opera
